Causes & Risk factors

Research shows that babies who have colic also have a high sensitivity to stimulation.
  • It is a popular theory that babies with colic are the way they are due to intestinal gas issues.
  • Some healthcare professionals think that a child with colic is not taking well to the food they are eating. For some, breast milk does not agree with them and in others the culprit is formula.
  • Fear and frustration are thought to be another reason for colic. That goes for the fear and frustration of the child and of the parents as the child can feel tension and feed off of it.
There are very little known risk factors for developing colic. Those listed below are the only factors that have been connected to the development of colic.
  • Smoking during pregnancy is said to play a role in colic.
  • Smoking after childbirth can make colic develop in breastfeed babies.
Again, these are only theories as there is no proof of any direct connection between smoking and having a child with colic, though it is never a good idea to smoke while you are pregnant.
