MediAngels, in its efforts to increase awareness about healthcare among people across the country, has started the MediAngels Oration Program, the first of the series having been delivered in April this year. The program aims to educate the general public about various health related issues, and at the same time provide a platform for the medical community to improve their knowledge base.

The first of the talks was delivered by Dr. P. Raghuram, Consultant Breast Cancer Surgeon at MediAngels. Dr. Raghuram is the Director and Consultant Oncoplastic Breast Cancer Surgeon at KIMS -USHALAKSHMI Centre for Breast Diseases. The talk was held at the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial (MGM) Hospital in Navi Mumbai. At least 150 doctors and several medical students attended the program. There was also a considerable section of attendees from the general public. Dr. Raghuram spoke about the importance of early detection of breast cancer and the reasons for it not being done in our country.

Lack of information about the disease, and access to super specialists is one of the main aspects that need to be addressed immediately. The other issue is the patriarchic nature of society in various smaller towns which leads to women shying away from addressing problems like breast cancer, and also being dependent on men to take them for consultation and checkups.

The MediAngels Oration program will be held on a monthly basis in various towns and cities in the country, especially in places where the knowledge and awareness of healthcare issues is very limited. The aim is to slowly make it a global program that endeavors to take this knowledge to various parts of the world where healthcare information is very poorly distributed.
