Role of Surgery: Surgery is usually not necessary unless other injuries are also involved. However such fractures need to be closely followed for development of C.S.F rhinorrhoea (clear watery discharge from nose),otorrhoea ( C.S.F  discharge from ear) meningitis ( infection in brain)  and potentially more serious injuries such as cranial nerve palsies. However, rhinorrhoea or otorrhoea persisting beyond 14 days generally require surgical treatment for prevention of meningitis.
