Treatment

The treatment depends on the cause and the type of the esophagitis:

General treatment:
Intake of medicines with plenty of water or temporarily stopping the medicine causing esophagitis help in relieving esophagitis.

Medical treatment:
  • Proton pump inhibitors: These are the medicines used in patients with reflux of stomach contents. The medicines are omeprazole or pantaprezole or lansoprazole given daily for 1 to 2 months depending on the severity.
  • Antibiotics: These are given in esophagitis of bacterial origin. In case of tuberculous esophagitis type anti Tuberculosis drugs need to be started.
  • Corticosteroids: They are given in cases of eosinophilic esophagitis.
  • Anti fungal treatment: Topical or oral or parenteral anti fungal therapy is started depending on the severity of the disease and patient’s immune response.
  • Dilatation of esophagus: It is useful in radiation induced or eosinophilic esophagitis.
  • Intravenous drip: It may be required to allow the esophageal healing and also to avoid dehydration.
Surgical Treatment:
It may be required to remove the damaged esophagus.
