Introduction
Erectile dysfunction or impotence is a difficulty or an inability to have and maintain a penile erection firm enough for sex. Ongoing erectile dysfunction is troublesome as well as loathsome condition in many. It can cause lot of stress and serious relationship issues.
The mechanism of erection of penis is as follows:
The penis has two chambers known as the corpora cavernosa which run the length of the penis. The corpora cavernosa are surrounded by a membrane, known as the tunica albuginea. The urethra, which is the channel for urine and the ejaculate, runs along the underside of the corpora cavernosa and is surrounded by the corpus spongiosum –a surrounding spongy tissue.
An erection begins with sensory and/or psychological stimulation. Impulses and excitation trigger the nerves and muscle tissues of the corpora cavernosa to relax and blood to flow inside the penis tissue. The blood creates stress in the corpora cavernosa, making the penis expand. The tunica albuginea- an envelope covering corpora cavernosa helps in maintaining erection. The erection ends when muscle groups in the penis contract to stop the inflow of blood and open the veins for blood outflow.
Erectile dysfunction is a serious health issue which needs medical treatment as well as psychological support. Treating an underlying condition could also be sufficient to reverse your erectile dysfunction. | |
