Classification & Types Based on the type of defective protein in hemoglobin, Thalassemia is classified as:
- Alpha Thalassemia
- Beta Thalassemia.
In Alpha Thalassemia, alpha globin protein is not synthesised or abnormal. In Beta Thalassemia, synthesis of beta globin protein is affected.
Based on the severity, Alpha Thalassemia and Beta Thalassemia are classified into three types:
- Thalassemia Major
- Thalassemia Intermedia
- Thalassemia Minor.
Thalassemia Major and Thalassemia Intermedia occur when the defective gene is inherited from both parents; and Thalassemia major is the more severe form. Thalassemia minor occurs when the defective gene is inherited from only one parent, and people with this form may have mild or no symptoms. | |
