Perniosis
 

Introduction

Chilblains refer to a condition which is caused by tightening up of vessels when temperatures drop. Chilblains are also called perniosis.  This is a normal condition just as your feet and hands become white and numb during cold times.  People with chilblains are said to have exaggerated conditions with cold. This is actually caused by extreme sensitivity to cold. The condition is not only seen in your feet and hands but also, heels, thighs, nose, calves and ears.

Epidemiology:
  • The condition is common in the elderly but it resolves before the fourth week as they last for one two three weeks.
  • Thin females who are below the age of thirty years have an increased prevalence of chilblains.
  • You might be affected by chilblains during winter and autumn; cold months.
  • Chilblains are common conditions which affect people in varied areas.
  • In United Kingdom, research has indicated that 10 % of its population gets chilblains at certain stage in their lives.
