Introduction

Pilonidal cyst occurs is near the tailbone or coccyx adjacent to the buttocks. It is a persistent infection and contains the hair follicle and skin debris. Later on an abscess may develop from the cyst known as Pilonidal abscess. The cyst might appear like a pimple. It makes the tailbone region painful and inflamed and the condition may remain asymptomatic and difficult to diagnose for a long duration.

Once treated and cured, there is a great chance (close to 40%) that it may recur.

Epidemiology

Men are more vulnerable than women. The cyst is commonly found in younger males, whose age is in between 18-24 years.

There are approximately 25-30 cases noted per 100,000 populace.

Caucasians people show higher incidences of the condition.
