Treatment

  • Avoid things that typically trigger the episodes of colic. Possible triggers include but are not limited to certain foods, certain medication, eating habits (too quickly, too much, etc.) and problems with breastfeeding (large nipples, latch problems, etc.)
  • Swaddling for comfort
  • Holding baby and rocking
  • Holding baby face down with pressure being applied to the stomach area.
  • Singing
  • Back rub
  • Allowing the child to completely drain one breast before switching to the other to avoid the different concentrations of milk to mix together so quickly.
  • Riding in the car
  • Gripe water or other anti-gas medications that are natural and safe for the child.
Some of these may work or none of them may work. It can be hit and miss as each child is different but all are safe and worth a try.
