Introduction
The most conditions most common of malformations of the craniofacial area are Cleft lip and cleft palate. Cleft lip is a separation found in the upper lip and cleft palate is a split found in the top (roof) of the mouth. In the One out of every 700 children in the United States are born with these malformations each year. These conditions can form unilaterally (one side only) or bilaterally (both sides) of the palate and the lip. Because the development of the palate and the lip are separate there is a possibility for a baby to be born with just one of these conditions or with both together.
Epidemiology:

There is a variance between the amount of births with cleft lip and palate depending on geography and ethnicity.

It has been found most in those of Asian and Native American linage.

1 out of every 500 live births occurs with this malformation present.

It is estimated that the highest number of live births with this abnormality is found in Chinese people (4.04 out of every 1000).

It is estimated that the second highest number of live births with this abnormality is found in Native American people (3.74 out of every 1000)

It is estimated that the lowest occurrences of this abnormality is found in people from Latin America and Africa. (1.04 and 1.67 respectively)
