Causes & Risk factors

Exact cause of bunions is not known. Certain contributing factors include:

  • Genetics: Bunions have been seen to run in families.
  • Hyperlaxity of joints (excessively loose joints) makes patients more prone to develop bunions.
  • Diseases like rheumatoid arthritis and gout may also result in development of bunions.

Prolonged wearing of excessively tight shoes may make the deformity worse.
