Treatment

 

  • Prednisolone, in high doses; if presented within few days of onset can be given to prevent weakness becoming paralysis by reducing nerve edema. Contraindicated in Ramsay- Hunt syndrome.
  • Protect eye with dark glasses, tear drops to prevent drying
  • Use of paper tape to depress the upper eyelid during sleep and prevent corneal drying
  • Massage of the weakened muscles
  • Lateral tarsorrhaphy if ectropion is severe
  • If recovery fails in long term (atleast 9 months), surgical correction of the drooping face can be attempted although results are rarely satisfactory.
