Causes and Risk Factors
It is a genetic condition and passed as autosomal recessive trait. Sometimes it is also found identical twins and X-linked.
Individuals without congenital heart diseases and having situsinversus can lead a normal life and are same in appearance. Congenital heart diseases, most commonly transposition of great arteries is more commonly associated situsinversus with levocardia.
Seen in less than 1 person in 10000 population.
Since individual with this rare condition can lead normal life, many times the condition is only discovered upon medical examination by Medical personnel when patient goes for some other complaints.
Individuals having this condition have increased risk to develop Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia and likewise persons with Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia have increased risk to develop Situsinversus.
Kartagener Syndrome is one condition having triad of chronic sinusitis, bronchiectasis and situsinversus. It is also associated with some other conditions like renal agenesis, renal ectopis, renal cell carcinoma, short rib polydactyly, congenital pancreatic fibrosis and pulmonary malformations.
Individuals with this condition may face difficulty in getting correct diagnosis about their other conditions. Pain of acute appendicitis is felt on left side and heart sounds are heard on right side and so on. They also face problems in organ transplantation.
