Investigations

Laboratory tests similar to both ARF and CRF:

Blood test:
  • Complete blood count
  • BUN or blood urea nitrogen: It increases during ARF.
  • Serum creatinine:  There may be abnormalities with ARF.
  • Creatinine clearance: It is a test used to measure the glomerular filtration rate.  Abnormal values are recorded in ARF.
  • Serum potassium:  Abnormal levels are seen in kidney failure.
Urinalysis:
  • The urine is examined by its physical, chemical and microscopic components.  This is done by two methods, by a 24-hour urine collection and a clean catch urine specimen.  Abnormalities are seen with ARF.
  • In the early stages, there are no signs or symptoms and lab tests may be the only method of diagnosing CRF.
  • Tests also required for CRF include:
  • Kidney ultrasound to detect kidney stones or obstruction
  • Biopsy
