Investigations
Laboratory investigation should include:

A complete blood count
-
A peripheral blood smear to show the presence of basket or smudge cells.

A reticulocyte count which measures the rate of production of immature red blood cells in the bone marrow.

Kidney and liver function tests to rule out abnormalities in functioning of the organs.

Other tests include:
-
Testing for immunoglobulin levels, serum protein electrophoresis, plasma b2 microglobulin level, immunophenotyping, and on occasion bone marrow biopsy and cytogenetic analysis.
