Investigations

Laboratory investigation should include:
  • A complete blood count
  • A peripheral blood smear to show the presence of basket or smudge cells.
  • A reticulocyte count which measures the rate of production of immature red blood cells in the bone marrow.
  • Kidney and liver function tests to rule out abnormalities in functioning of the organs.
  • Other tests include:
  • Testing for immunoglobulin levels, serum protein electrophoresis, plasma b2 microglobulin level, immunophenotyping, and on occasion bone marrow biopsy and cytogenetic analysis.
