MediAngels, the World’s First Online Hospital, has entered the finale of the Intel DST Challenge 2012. MediAngels is one amongst twelve finalists chosen from the APAC region. Two teams have been chosen from each country and MediAngels is one of two teams privileged to be chosen from India.

MediAngels was one amongst the 120 applicants shortlisted in the screening round of the Intel DST Asia Pacific Challenge 2012; this initial screening round of this prestigious competition saw 10 organizations each being chosen from each of the 12 participating countries of the Asia Pacific region. APIN, the Asia Pacific Incubation Network, is a network of business incubators across Asia Pacific region which plans to organize a Technology Innovation Challenge Programme and is sponsored by Intel Corporation and the Department of Science and Technology of the Government of India.

MediAngels addresses the larger issue faced by the society in the healthcare delivery sector using a high tech, high growth technology innovation to deliver healthcare affordably to all. MediAngels believes that the acute inequity in the healthcare delivery resources can only be met by technological innovations. The entrepreneurship skills of two young super specialists led to the creation of this platform which provides healthcare solutions from more than 350 of the best physician specialists from more than 20 countries practicing in 90+ medical specialties. In a physical hospital, getting the top most quality doctors and medical professionals becomes difficult due to the extreme inequity in distribution of doctors world over. MediAngels bridges this through the use of technology to improve operational efficiency. MediAngels envisions that in the future, patients will travel to a physical hospital only for surgery or for treatments requiring hospitalization, rest of the healthcare delivery such as consultations, lab tests etc. will be done from home, facilitated by technology.

In the last one year, MediAngels has facilitated more than 6000 patient transactions and has a loyal following across the world. While 60% of MediAngels consumers come from metro cities, about 40% come from semi-urban and rural areas, where technology and broadband has reached, but there is still an acute shortage of specialist doctors. MediAngels facilitates consultations (expert opinion from super-specialists at a click/call/video chat), Lab Investigations (home collection of samples & uploading digitized reports) & eRecords (storage & maintenance of patient's medical records).

The National University of Singapore and the University of California, Berkeley will be engaged with the mentoring of the contestants, at the finale of the Intel DST Challenge at Bangalore in August 2012.
