Causes & Risk factors

Alkaptonuria is a genetic disorder, and each of a child’s parents must pass him a copy of the defective gene for him to be affected. The gene defect results in the accumulation of a substance called homogentisic acid in the body. It accumulates in skin, cartilage etc. and is excreted in urine.
