Introduction
The word Ascites is based on Greek word ‘askos’ meaning a sac. The condition ascites refers to fluid collection in abdominal cavity in the tissue known as peritoneium which lines the abdominal cavity and organs. Healthy persons do not have collection of abdominal fluid.  About 80% of ascites are associated with liver cirrhosis. Ascites due to liver cirrhosis indicates advanced liver disease and has 3 year survival for 50%. Other sources for ascites are cancers, infection, kidney failure and severe heart failure.
