Introduction The condition ‘astigmatism’ refers to the vision defect, caused by improper formation of images on the retina due to aberrations in the shape of the lens and nature of refraction of light. We are able to see an object when the diffused light reflected from the object is focused with the help of the lens to form an image on the retina. But the diffused light has components of light rays from all the planes and there is difference in the focal point of the rays that emanate from different planes and the maximum distortion is from the planes that are perpendicular to one another, causing a shift in the focal points. The result is that the image formed at the ends of the object are blurred compared to the central portion. | |
